In April 2000, 300 Christmas trees were planted at Red Hawk Ranch. The first year only 35% of the trees survived. Aside from gophers, rabbits and squirrels feasting above and below ground on our trees, we minimized the importance of water. We also learned coyotes devastated our irrigation lines by chewing through them to obtain water. In the ensuing years, we added over 1,300 additional trees and lowered our annual loss rate to 9% in 2004 and continue with losses in that range. We have placed a number of buckets throughout the fields to provide water for wild life, nearly eliminating chewed up water lines.
It takes most trees 7 - 10 years to reach an age of harvest. Some trees mature more rapidly, such as the Monterey Pines we offer for sale. We also offer a variety of container trees and some pre-cut Noble fir from Washington or Oregon.
Our TREE FRESH certification means we are trained in the best scientific techniques of tree care and are committed to storing our pre-cut trees in water to provide you with the freshest possible tree. Printed information is available for you to take home and review things you learn at the tree plantation.
We operate a small gift shop that was designed by us and built by Rod. I stock the shop with a variety of gifts: some children's toys, lavender soaps and sachets from my organic lavender field, and Red Hat regalia including china. There is always a focus on kitchen and cooking with aprons, towels, dishrags, cookie cutters --- new and vintage --- to use as tree decor or for baking. Some traditional tree decorations and lights are also available. This is a great spot for your Holiday shopping.
